Immigration Day

We made it!  After a long, hard trip, everyone finally passed all of their inspections and tests and made it to America.  Thank you, thank you to the many people who helped in many big and small ways.  Thank you to all of you who were able to attend the Parent Night.  The kids were so excited to share everything with you.

Now that we’ve made it to America, we are about to begin our World Tour!  Look out for several notes coming home soon with more information.

*Important* Immigration Day 2012

The time is quickly approaching… Immigration Day!  As many of you are aware, the second grade does an immigration reenactment.  This is one of our biggest days of the year, and one the students will always remember.  This is also a day that takes lots of work, and NEEDS lots of volunteers.

Immigration Day will be on Thursday, January 12, 2012.  The volunteers would be needed for most of the morning (8:15- 11:30).  As the morning before school will be so crazy, parents who are wanting to volunteer are asked to attend a short Volunteer Meeting on Wednesday, January 11 @ 3:20 pm.  At the meeting, I will give a run-down on what each of the volunteers will be doing.

We are looking for a couple of parents who speak a foreign language, let me know if you are interested in helping with this.  Also, I need 1 parent who be willing to be in charge of refreshments for the parent night (contacting buisnesses for donations, etc).

Another item to add to your calendar, that same night, January 12, we will be having a Parent Immigration Night @ 6:00.  There will be a short program and then the parents will have the opportunity to go on a tour of our Immigration Reenactment.  This is a neat opportunitiy for the parents to get a first-hand glimpse of what happened earlier that day.

If you are interested, either leave a comment here, or email me as soon as possible.  I would like to finalize volunteers before winter break.  Thank you in advance for your willingness.  This day is only made possible through the help of our wonderful parents!

Books, books, books!

At parent teacher conferences, many of you inquired about what books are at your child’s reading level.  There is an excellent website that has quite the list of regular books that can be found at a bookstore or the library.  Click on the grade level to see a list of books at the certain levels.  Note: all students aren’t necessarily reading at a second grade level.  Go by the lettered level rather than the grade level.    Please use and abuse this site!

Also, Scholastic book orders went home today.  Please let me know if you would like any of the books you order to be “secretly” delivered to you before winter break.  Thanks!

Civil Rights Vignettes

Dear Parents,

In class we have been learning about Civil Rights leaders.  We are going to be working in small groups with the other second grade classes to create a silent vignette about each leader.  We will be performing on Tuesday, November 22 from 8:30-10:00.  The vignettes will be spread out in the three second grade classrooms. This will be “open house” style, so feel free to come and go as you please.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Hope to see you there!

A quick note…

Parent Teacher Conferences are next week!  I look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your child and their progress in second grade.  A reminder note will be coming home on Monday with the time and date you signed up for.  I’ll see you all next week!

***Each student needs an empty tissue box for art class.  Please have your students bring any and all you might have!  Toilet paper/paper towel rolls are also needed. ***

Show and Teach

Next week, we will be starting Show and Teach!  This is one of the students’ favorite things we do each week.  I believe many of you may already be familiar with this from other teachers.  Attached is a note explaining as well as a schedule.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper Airplanes Experiment

We learned all about the Scientific Method.   To apply our learning, we did our own experiment and decided to work with paper airplanes!  Our research question was, “Which type of paper airplanes flies the furthest?”.  We completed all the steps and had a great time learning.

1. Decide on a research question.

2. Conduct research.

3. Develop your hypothesis.

4. Make a plan.

5. Conduct your experiment.

6. Collect and record data.

7. Draw conclusions.

Constitutional Convention

For several weeks, we studied all about America’s Constitution.  We learned what a constitution is and why it is so important.  To end our unit, each of us was given the name of one of the founding fathers.  The second grade then went to the Utah State Capitol to have our own Constitutional Convention.  The delegates assembled and the meeting began.  After much discussion, we voted on rules for our class.  Then we each signed the Constitution, promising to obey these rules.  It was such a neat day!

Hello!

Welcome to second grade!  This is going to be an exciting year full of learning and lots of fun.  I’m excited to meet all of you and get to know you better.  Don’t forget that school starts on August 23 and Back to School Night for parents is on August 25.  I hope you got my letter this summer and I hope you’ll write to me telling me about yourself.
